1 dead, 1 injured in Placer County I-80 crash
Two lanes were closed in the area on westbound I-80 due to the crash.
PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A fatal crash in Placer County caused traffic delays on I-80, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said the crash happened on westbound I-80, east of Penryn Road. Online traffic logs show the crash was shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Only one vehicle was involved in the crash, CHP said. A Toyota 4Runner veered off the road and collided with a tree on the right shoulder.
The front seat passenger, a woman in her 20s, died at the scene, according to CHP. The driver, a male, suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital in the area.
While the crash is still under investigation, the CHP said the vehicle may have experienced a mechanical failure on the road.
Both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts when the crash happened, the CHP said.
