DEVIL’S SLIDE, Calif. — One person was killed Thursday night after reportedly falling from a cliff at Devil’s Slide, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, just hours after a separate rescue involving an overturned Tesla teetering over the edge.
Highway 1 south of Pacifica was shut down around 7:50 p.m. as multiple law enforcement agencies and medical personnel responded.
The person, who was not identified, succumbed to their injuries at the scene, authorities said.
According to the sheriff’s office, the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
The roadway was cleared and reopened following a two-hour closure.
Just hours earlier, rescuers responded at 2:45 p.m. to an overturned Tesla that was found hanging over the side of a cliff at Devil’s Slide, just south of Gray Whale Cove State Beach.
At one point, the car was only being held up by a tree with the driver trapped inside, according to Cal Fire.
The Tesla was stabilized, and the driver was extricated through the back window.
