CA insurance commissioner issues moratorium on cancellations for some LA County fires
What you need to know.
California’s insurance commissioner banned companies from canceling or not renewing home insurance for people affected by the Palisades and Eaton wildfires in Los Angeles County.
The moratorium covers those within the fires’ perimeters and adjoining ZIP codes, regardless of losses, for a year from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Jan. 7 emergency declaration.
Commissioner Ricardo Lara said, “I’m using my powers to prevent insurance companies from canceling or non-renewing policies in wildfire-impacted areas, so people don’t face the stress of finding new insurance during this horrific event.”
The Department of Insurance website lets people check if their ZIP code is covered.
Lara also called for companies to pause non-renewals or cancellations issued between Oct. 9 and Jan. 7 for at least six months to provide stability for affected communities.
He urged companies to extend the 60-day grace period for those impacted by the fires.
