SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — San Francisco school officials reversed plans Friday night to lay off 34 counselors and 117 teacher aides due to improved fiscal health.
The district received approval to hire 77 teachers for the 2025-2026 school year, adding to 162 positions approved earlier.
Despite these changes, over 375 staff members opted for early retirement, saving the district $7 million, and about 100 central office workers were laid off.
The district had previously faced a $113 million deficit and increased state oversight due to financial issues.
